The History

Viticulture has been present in the history of Andújar since time immemorial. In the XVII century the vineyard was concentrated in the areas known as Peñallana, La Alcaparrosa and Los Majuelos.

Each house had its own wine press and its own winery, this fact gave rise to denominate the houses of the mountain "Viñas". In the middle of the XX century, which gave in the area of Viñas de Peñallana a total of 602 hectares of vineyard, "that was yesterday."

At present, the winery Viñas Tintas Capellanías due to the interest shown by the winemaker and oenologist, José Luis Navarro Cruz, tries to recover and retake a part of the millennial cultural tradition of wine in the area.

The Vineyards

Viñedo

The vineyards are in the vicinity of the Sierra de Andújar Natural Park and the Shrine of Our Lady Virgen de la Cabeza, specifically on the Alcaparrosa road, known as Pago de Capellanías and / or Viñas de Peñallana. The orography of the place: 600 m of altitude, sandy lands and the orientation of the vineyard are the perfect combination to give the wine a body and a character, defined by the French as "le terrain" ("the terrain").

The spectacle of colors and smells due to the diverse flora and fauna of the Mediterranean forest of the place, are elements of influence in the development of the aromatic complexity of this wine.

The cultivated varieties are Tempranillo, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Merlot and some centenary strains, such as the Jaén Tinta variety, remnants of the winegrowing splendor of the area in the XVIII-XIX centuries.
